Beef Pho Soup with Clear Vermicelli
Temple tofu with vermicelli salad

If you’re looking for cheap, tasty, and quick Vietnamese food Banh Mi 11 is the place to go to. The shop is right on Great Eastern Street, only a few meters from the tube station and some stunning graffiti. It’s small, but there are always some spare seats (even at peak hours) if you fancy staying in and watching Shoreditch’s passers-by, which is pretty fascinating.

But let’s get to the serious bit….

I went in Banh Mi 11 on a frosty afternoon with Kun for a quick lunch and we both enjoyed it quite a lot. The menu is simple and straightforward if you don’t ignore the instructions for it on the top (silly me!). You can choose between banh mi (a baguette), noodle soup, rice box, or noodle salad and then add meat, fish, or tofu.

I went for noodles with temple tofu, which is ‘fresh tofu marinated with sweet or sour sauce.’  The tofu was absolutely amazing – juicy and full of flavour. The vermicelli were really nice, though a bit difficult to eat for a white Italian I must confess. The salad that came with the vermicelli wasn’t something special and the dressing didn’t impress my palate; however I gladly ate half of it. I was glad tap water was on the table with glasses, which is something that doesn’t often happen in take-away restaurants.

Kun is kind of a regular, so he had his favourite Beef Pho, which came with a soup with clear noodles. It definitely looked palatable.

The portions were perfect for rumbling tummies and the prices are quite good – £6 for each dish. So, all in all, we both liked the place and will definitely visit soon during lunch break.
